The work of a major hydraulic dam launched in Niger

The so-Sung construction of the gigantic Kandadji hydroelectric dam in Niger, on the Niger River, about 150 km upstream of Niamey, entrusted to the Chinese company China Gezhouba group company (CGGC) has become a dream come true.

In fact, Nigerian President Mahamadou Issoufou relaunched, on Tuesday 26 March 2019, the construction work on the River Niger of a major dam essential for the country confronted with recurrent shortages of electricity and the flood of murders and frequent. Close to 58 000 people will be displaced from the site of the book. According to the Nigerian President, the whole of "this structuring project has an estimated cost of 740 billion CFA francs" (1.2 billion euros).

It took almost 60 years after its independence for Niger to see the first stone of the construction of its largest hydro-agricultural dam in Kandadji. A structuring project for President Issoufou Mahamadou: "in some parts of Niger, we have the kilowatt-hour fuel oil at 200 CFA francs. The Kandadji dam will give us a kilowatt-hour at 20 CFA francs. So it will be low-cost energy. It is really a project that must support the economic growth of Niger. »

The dam will build more than 45 000 hectares of irrigated land, and produce 130 megawatts. This quickly convinced the financial partners, such as Marie-Laure akin-Olugbade of the African Development Bank (AfDB): we see this project as a truly transformative project. That is the kind of project that we would like to be able to do in a larger number of countries. »

The populations of the cantons of Ayérou and de Dessa have appropriated this project. "People have a lot of hope that once this project is done, the living conditions will improve," explains their representative, Almoustapha Sayers.

The water is planned in four years and this project has been entrusted to a Chinese company. "The President of the Republic has reassured us of his support for the realization of this very important project for Niger within the deadline, we will provide efforts to mobilize all our resources so that the project can be achieved in the best possible time" , promised the Director General of CGGC Niger SARL, Zheng Zufei.
